Lesson One:  Using a multi-media program stored in CD-ROM format.

Lesson Topic: How to evaluate a Lesson.

Duration: 40 minutes (25 minutes of observation and comment, 15 minutes for evaluation using checklist.

Audience: Year one students in a teachers' college pursuing Foundation courses in Education who are required to participate in a Practicum exercise in Years 2 and 3 of their training.

Instructional Media:
Computers, software available on compact disk featuring Notetaker with video images of a teacher and a set of students in a Science lesson.

An observation checklist, a modified version of the format used in the Practicum finals.

Objectives:
A. Given a rating list, students will preview item to familiarize themselves with aspects of the checklist.
B. While viewing the activities displayed on the monitor the trainee will:
For formative Evaluation purposes:
1. Observe the techniques and strategies adapted by the class teacher, and make relevant comments and notes in the defined area of the software.
2. Identify the strengths and weaknesses in the performance of the teacher and students.
C. On completing the observation of the micro-teaching exercise the trainee will:

3. Record and rate the teaching session observed, on a checklist provided.

Description of the Program:
The program entitled "Teacha Teach" runs for approximately 30 minutes, and contains video images of the performance of a teacher using a variety of instructional strategies to enhance performance of students involved in a Science Lesson.
The program has the capability to allow the students/trainee to record and comment on activities observed. As is normal in the use of CD-ROM format the sequence and pace of the video images, can be manipulated; i.e. paused, repeated, searched, etc, as desired by the user.

Procedure:
At the start of the lesson trainees would be given instructions relevant to the using of software. The checklist is handed out and they should be advised to preview the list before critiquing the lesson. They will be expected to make relevant points and comments about the performances observed in the lesson. These comments will be used as a part of the summative evaluation which culminate the activities for this lesson.

 

Lesson Two: Using the Internet

Course Title: Adult Education

Lesson Topic: Research Methods

Duration: As dictated by activity and accessibility to the Internet.

Objectives:
While working with printed materials developed for the course students will be able to:
1. access the Internet to interact with classmates through email services
2. enter chat rooms and participate in chat sessions with relevant interest groups
3. access on-line library research facilities to enhance literature review and data collecting skills
4. identify and visit web sites that deal with specific subject matter
5. recognize the Internet as another dimension bridging the gap in communication and providing more access to knowledge and information.

Procedure:
Students will follow instructions from printed material as a normal course requirement and where activities are specific to Internet services.
These include:
a. entering chat sessions to interact with groups of students pursuing similar courses
b. communicating by e-mail with other classmates
c. accessing on-line library facilities to research topics for a project
d. visiting specified web-sites for additional information on the topic.

 

 Lesson Three: Using a word-processing tool in a lesson.

Lesson Topic: Writing a Newspaper article

Audience: Students - ages 14 - 15 in a high school

Duration: 40 minutes

Objectives:

With the aid of a computer program students will be able to:
1. apply the appropriate commands that will affect the presentation of a newspaper article
2. manipulate the features of the application tool to change the layout and format of a document.
3. understand and use the editing features of the word processing tool
4. insert pictures and clip art material if appropriate.

Instructional Media:

Software/program Microsoft WORD

Procedure:
1. Students will type article prepared by them as assignment from a previous lesson in two columns while following the instruction of the instructor.
2. Identify and use the features such as: bold, all caps, italics, colors, font size.
3. Arrange paragraphs in justified format
4. Insert picture or clip art feature where appropriate.
5. Use the find and replace, grammar and spell features to update and check the article.
6. Use the block, cut and paste, and inserting features to manipulate the contents of the article.
